Advance Auto policies

Post by mrsnicks »

So I learned 2 things I didn't know the other day when trying to get my power steering pump replaced.

1. The stores do not share purchase history. You have to go to the store you bought it for them to find it in your history.
2. Anything older than 2 years is purged from your purchase history.

I got SUPER LUCKY with the return on this. I had lost my receipt and in my history it only showed the core return and that was dated 7/19/2008. I went there on 7/14/2010. I can only assume I bought the pump and a week or 2 passed before I returned the core. If I had been any later there would have been no record of my purchase and I would have been pissed and screwed!

The number 1 thing I learned from this is...

KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS.

I scan all of my receipts and save them to a folder on my computer. I also keep an Excel spreadsheet with a list of all of the parts, date purchased, and who I purchased from. I put a hyperlink in the Excel file to each of the receipts, in the event that I've bought several parts on the same receipt.

That way, if I need one, I just look it up and print it out.

Takes a little time initially, but it's a lot simpler than keeping up with a bunch of odd-sized paper receipts and a lot quicker to find a receipt if I need one. It also helps me keep track of what I spend on the beast (sometimes that can be VERY disheartening!!).

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

70,

Can you train my secretary? :D

That sounds like a system I think I will try. Sure beats a file folder full of receipts when you are looking for something. Some companies use that paper that fades within a couple months now. I have found some receipts blank in the file.

The water pump failed on my 390 a couple of months ago so I looked thru my receipts and found it. I bought it at Discount Auto in 1985. I took the pump and receipt that was hand written and said lifetime warrenty and went to the Advance Auto which used to be Discount and showed it to the counter boy. He said its not valid as we are Advance Auto now. I asked to speak with the store manager ,he looked at it and smiled and said wow I haven't seen a hand written ticket in years. Of coarse we will honor it no problem.

Lifetime warranty on a part that has a high chance of failing again eventually. That's a good warranty.
