What's an antique vehicle?

Post by jzjames »

What is an antique? People will say a different number of years constitutes and antique. I dont even know what the accepted number is. But I gotta say, our bumps a definately antiques in the year 2010. That would make an age of 38 to 43 year old vehicles. I make this pronouncement after rebuilding the original distributor on my 67 Flareside. Man, these things are OLD! The technology is ancient!

I guess it depends on how old you are. I consider mine to be vintage, not antique, but then I remember them (barely) when they were new. To put it in context, my first truck was a 50 chevy in 1986. I considered it antique, even though at the time it was actually newer than my 40 year old bump.

It varies from state to state how old the vehicle has to be to qualify for antique vehicle registration.

it depends on how you look at it. if you look at it by how you can register your truck then it doesnt take much. if you look at it by availablitity. then that is another way to look at it. another way woul dbe to consider the model A and model T. those are antiques for sure. and you dont see them everyday. and you dont see them for sale very much either. not as much as bumps.

At 25 years old in Michigan ,you can register a car or truck as an historic vehicle.
you can get a lifetime plate of the of the same year as the car.

You're not supposed to use it for a daily driver though, just car shows and special events.

(but i think when I drive my old trucks every day is special.)

Here in NC, you can get Antique Auto plates for any vehicle that's 35 years old.

What really helps out is that any vehicle 35 years old or older doesn't have to have a State Inspection.

From what I read, they figure that anybody driving a vehicle that old is taking really good care of it and/or its being/been restored.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

In Georgia, an antique vehicle is anything over 25 years(according to the govt). You can get a "hobby/antique" tag once your truck/car has passed that age. The tag is the same cost as a regular tag($15). You also don't have to have emissions done on it if its registered in one of the few counties that do that.

In my opinion, bumps are definitely vintage, but not quite antique. I would consider anything prior to 1950 an antique, but that will change as time moves on.

Forget for a moment how different states classify vehicles. Those fellows who are "older", and remember looking at the new cars in the show rooms back in the 50's and 60's, probably have a hard time thinking that a vehicle built in the 70's and 80's could be an antique. When anyone mentioned someone had an antique, it was usually a car from waaay back! Think of how well off you could be if you saved all of your under $100 rides. (with gas at 25 cents per gallon)

Being born the same year as my bump, 1970, I don't think it is an antique yet. Just very "mature".

Just because a vehicle qualifies for antique tags doesn't make it a real antique, just a technical antique. Here in Va. the law says 25 years. That means an 85 Toyota Corolla is an antique car. Not hardly. 83 Firebird? 85 EXP? Not antiques, just old cars. As a matter of fact, because so many people were abusing the law by antique tagging their K cars and Hondas to avoid state inspections, the General Assembly passed a new law requiring you to provide DMV with a notorized statement swearing you had another registered vehicle to use as a daily driver. Also, showing up at the landfill in an 83 F100 filled with junk and sporting antique tags will now get you a visit from the state police. A neighbor found this out the hard way. And there's also what your insurance company will do when you get in an accident in your "antique" on tuesday morning during rush hour on your way to work.

I don't think a car or truck can be truely considered an antique until someone walks by while you're pumping gas and says "hey...look at that cool old truck".

Another good way to judge is to open the hood. If you can actually see the engine, it's an antique.
