Defecting Through My Son

Post by ford4x4fun »

Well,

I have to be honest. In high school I had a 1971 K5 Blazer. I really enjoyed that truck. Well I have decided that I am going to give it to my son, who at the moment is 12. That gives us 4 years on a father son project. My plans are to find a chevy short bed or a long bed with a good body. I am going to put the cab on the blazer frame, and than cut the bed down to fit. The body on the blazer is pretty well shot, we brought it from Colorado, and the KY weather combined with the salt didn't do it any good. He is a Ford kid as well, as a matter of fact this is the only Chevy my family or my wifes family owns. But it isn't about brand it is about having him build his first car. Hopefully he will have more respect for it, and I wont have to worry about him so bad. What do you all think and any suggestions on the build. I will also be finishing my truck when I get home. I have a separate bump fund going now. So as I do my truck he can work on his truck.

, That's awesome! Even though it's a bow-tie I really like the earlier K5s not as much as the Broncos but still :P. I'm sure that you and your son will have a good time working on it, and it will probably bring you guys a lot closer. Too bad the body is rotted, for the most part just about any K5s I've seen especially of the earlier years are totally shot, I really like the body style and would rather have a K5 than a C10 body but like you said the body is rotted and your chances of saving that body or finding a solid donor are probably pretty slim :o. I can personally say on my behalf that when you take part in building your own vehicle by yourself or with your dad's help you have a great deal of respect for it, most kids see my truck as an old piece of junk because I don't have a navigation system, A/C, Power steering or any of those kinds of things on my truck but it is what it is and after putting a lot of blood sweat and tears into it I can call it my own. I don't really have any suggestions, I say leave it up to you and your son since you guys will be doing the work and it, and it will be for you guys that way you can have it built the exact way you want. Also glad to hear that you'll get the chance to do some more work on your bump when you get back home. Until then stay safe over there! And Thanks for your service.

I had a friend that drove a truck like you were describing. It was a mid 70's pickup on a blazer frame with the bed shortened. It was a cool looking 4x4 and really short, but at first glance it looked factory.

I know someone that had the same thing, looked good but would give it a second look after seeing it the first time because something didnt look right, a blazer with a bed line. The truck had a small lift and 33s on it and was a sharp looking truck.

Billy,

You're now welcome at my house anymore man!

Just kiddin'...better than "rice" / can still use SAE tools / availability of parts still plentiful.
Sound like a good father and son project for sure.
Don't forget there's several "boneyards" over here in Polk County next door to you when you get back. I still see bumps in the yards, (don't really look for the other brand) but i bet they are here too.
