interchanging parts
i find it funny that if you have something like a john deere it is pretty much a john deere part you have to buy. well not always and that is the subject i wanted to laugh about here. i have a bolens compact tractor as they call it. it has a iseki japanese made diesel engine in it. it is one of the most bullet proof tractors i have ever seen. not that i have seen many. but i only use it once a month or so. and it is hard to start because it has to preheat the glow plugs and that runs down the battery fast. and starting fluid is a pain to get it started also. it almost gives the engine a static lock and it turns over real slow using it. so anyway i am holding the key in the start position and i crank it too long. the starter solenoid sticks after i let off the key and starts smoking. because it stuck in the start position. that ruined the solenoid. so anyway i get a hold of my supplier for parts. and a new solenoid is 70 plus dollars not including the shipping. which was over inflated also. so i do a search on the internet and it leads me to ebad. well i am not buying or doing any business with ebad until. but one seller has a list of what this solenoid fits. and i will be it fits nissan pickups. so i go to the junkyard and it about 30 minutes and 5.45 i have a used solenoid for my tractor. it goes to show you. that interchangability is just knowing what else it fits.

Re: interchanging parts
The old Bolens tractors are pretty much bullet-proof even though the new ones totally suck
. I never would've guessed that a Lawn-mower and a Nissan pickup would have the same starter solenoid though
.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Fordman, I'll probably have to tap your 'what'll work' knowledge about the clutch fork pretty soon. And by the way, thanks for parting with the pedal assembly for such a reasonable sum. As soon as I get the cultch linkage installed I'll be looking for a ford clutch fork to work the 12" clutch, 385 series block.

Re: interchanging parts
I have an 83 Ford 1900 30HP diesel 4x4 tractor. It's made in Japan by Shibaura. It really is one tough sob. It looks so rough, it has been so abused, neglected and thrashed by a logging company that it was given to me, for free. From the looks of it I thought it was a hopeless case when I picked it up and planned to retro a newer diesel engine on it. Nope, it fired right up after pumping the water from all the cylinders, draining 5 gallons of water from the pan and some heavy duty steam cleaning.
I use it every day, it's the ugliest thing you could ever see, it's clear by first glance that the whole thing was rolled down a hill at some point, probably several times. What surprises me the most is when someone compliments the tractor when I'm loading something on thier truck. "I'd never guess that thing would lift that or run that good!" they say.
Fordman, much of the problem with the older diesels starting is crap starters. The starters weren't adequate when the tractor was new. I retro'd a much newer Denso gear reduction starter off a 2.2L Kubota to fit the 1.4L Shibaura replacing the POS direct drive Hitachi starter it had. With some 2/0 battery cables the engine rip starts now.
Starting fluid is really bad on a diesel. I feel sorry for your tractor.
