Steering wheel removal

Post by mike_68 »

I need to get the steering wheel off to take a look at the turn signal components. What's the trick after you get this nut off? It doesn't budge any more than with it on. Thanks!

Get a steering whelle puller form your parts store. It should only run about ten bucks. It should come of easily then. Somtimes you need to smack the shaft with a hammer, but the wheels are not usually too bad to get off.

a little inside trick if you have an air hammer and compressor, using the pointed punch bit pull on the steering wheel and a couple hits with the air hammer on the top of the shaft and the steering wheel falls off, a little faster than a puller although tje puller may be the safer way to go. :D

Here's a photo of a wheel puller. Also, here's a nifty photo of a walking stick on one of my tires. We don't see many around here so it was a bit of an occasion.

Just be careful of hitting the shaft to remove it. Too much can actually hurt the bearings, especially if they already have some wear on them.

Just put the wheel on and nut and tighten down the nut, it will ress itself on, make sure to have the nut on more than a couple threads may have to hit the steering wheel a couple times, or you may strip out the shaft
